Bronze
Process
I
use the lost wax method to make bronzes like the lamps and fountains
on this page. First a rubber mold is made from my original sculpture.
With the rubber mold I make a wax model for the next step, which is
preparing a high fire ceramic shell mold. The shell mold is cure fired
and dewaxed using 1500 degrees heat. Now with the shell mold completed
I can finally cast the bronze. I pour the molten bronze into the shell
where there was once a wax mold.
Once
the metal has cooled the shell can be broken away to reveal the rough
cast which still needs cleaning and polishing. To make the intricately
shaped fountains below, I welded many smaller bronze castings together.
For the finishing touch I can color the metal with acids before mounting
on a base. Richard Mole
